Program Objectives

This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in healthcare administrative, billing, coding, and revenue cycle positions. Students develop knowledge and skills related to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, electronic health records, healthcare reimbursement systems, insurance claims processing, and medical coding.

Special emphasis is placed on the accurate application of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code sets, as well as compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, documentation standards, and reimbursement requirements.

Graduates are prepared to perform medical billing and coding functions in a variety of healthcare settings, including physician offices, clinics, hospitals, healthcare systems, billing services, and other healthcare administrative environments.

What You'll Learn

Our Medical Billing & Coding curriculum prepares students for the documentation, coding, and reimbursement side of the healthcare industry, with no clinical or phlebotomy work involved in this program. Our students all learn:

Medical Coding

ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding for diagnoses, procedures, and services, including outpatient/inpatient and physician-practice coding.

Medical Billing & Reimbursement

Insurance claims, CMS-1500 forms (manual and electronic), appeals, collections, and revenue cycle management.

Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Hands-on use of EHR systems and Sim Chart software used in medical offices.

MBC Healthcare Foundations

Medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and physician documentation standards.

MBC Externship

200-hour supervised externship in a billing/reimbursement setting.

What You Need to Apply

Compass Career College strives to create an accessible and supportive learning environment for individuals interested in vocational and healthcare training. The Medical Billing and Coding program uses open acceptance admissions, so there are no entrance exams or placement tests. Our admissions team can walk you through the full list of documents needed to enroll.

Admission Requirements May Include

  • High school diploma, transcript, or high school equivalency
  • TB skin test and current immunization records
  • Completed enrollment application and orientation

Certifications & Career Preparation

Program Certification

The Medical Billing & Coding program includes coursework designed to introduce students to professional standards commonly recognized within the healthcare administration field.

Upon successful completion of the program, students may be eligible to sit for the following certification:

Nationally Registered Certified Coding Specialist (NRCCS) – National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP)

Compass Career College programs are designed to prepare students for professional certification examinations where applicable. However, certification requirements, eligibility, and outcomes are determined by the respective credentialing organizations.

Students are encouraged to research certification pathways and speak with instructors or advisors regarding preparation resources.

Completion of the program does not guarantee certification or employment outcomes.
